CAIRO - At an invitation from the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States (LAS), Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org) participated in the 4th meeting of the Higher Coordination Committee of the Arab Literacy Decade (2015-2024) which was recently held in Cairo. The meeting was organized by the Secretariat’s Science and Scientific Research Directorate and chaired by the Adult Education Authority in Egypt.

TAG-Org expressed pride at its participation in the meetings, which witnessed the participation of official delegations from a number of Arab countries and civil society institutions, and extended its gratitude to the Arab League, represented by the Social Affairs Sector-Science and Scientific Research Directorate.

HE Dr. Talal Abu-Ghazaleh commended the Arab Summit’s resolution adopted by the Arab League, which led to the proclamation of the Arab Literacy Decade.

“This resolution is extremely important because it includes Alphabetical, Digital and Cultural illiteracy to enable self-learning by the Arab citizens in this digital age which is shifting from education to learning,” Dr. Abu-Ghazaleh said.

The meeting was held as a part of the implementation of the Arab Literacy Decade adopted by the General Secretariat in the framework of Egypt’s initiative launched during the Kuwait Summit in 2014, with the aim of eradicating illiteracy throughout the Arab world by developing an agenda of actions, defining roles of all stakeholders and establishing a timeframe for implementation.

TAG-Org Executive Director of International Professional Partnerships, Mr. Salah Abu Osbeh, expressed pride on behalf of the Organization for being invited to take part in the meeting and implement recommendations relating to the Decade in cooperation with the League’s Secretariat, ALESCO and all member states of the Higher Coordination Committee, noting that TAG-Org has offices in every Arab country enabling its experts to effectively execute any assigned tasks related to this initiative.

Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization has previously submitted a paper that included a program for eliminating Alphabetical, Digital and Cultural illiteracy, which was developed based on TAG-Org's expertise in the fields of training and education extending over 46 years throughout the Arab world.

Moreover, the Organization gave a detailed presentation on education in the age of knowledge, the necessity for using ICT as an empowerment tool in all fields, and knowledge as the foundation of learning.

At the end of the meeting, the participants submitted a number of recommendations which included their acknowledgment of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization’s readiness to technically and financially establish a specialized website for the Arab Literacy Decade of and Adult Education; TAG-Org’s willingness to coordinate with the League and the Arab League Educational, Cultural and Scientific Organization (ALECSO) to develop the website in addition to benefitting from and building on previous experiences in the field of adult education. The attendees also welcomed TAG-Org’s initiative to develop a smartphone application to help fight illiteracy.
